132kV three core subsea cable repair
ecs completed the repair of the 132kV three core oil filled cable installed between the town of Kaula Perlis and Langkawi Island in the north of Malaysia. The three core oil filled cable had been installed 30 years ago and had failed electrically near the subsea to land cable transition joint.
Working with local partners, A&A Dinar SDH BHD, a repair was made by cutting the subsea cable and installing a new armour clamp. A three core oil filled cable to single core XLPE cable transition joint was also installed. A&A Dinar were then responsible for the installation and jointing of the new XLPE cable and terminations in the substation.
ecs assembled the necessary components and within 10 days shipped the repair materials.
A Project Manager/Engineer, Jointing Team and a Hydraulic Technician were also despatched to Malaysia to complete the works.
The scope of work included management of the hydraulic system over the 27km length of subsea cable, including an analysis of the cable oil to check the quality before jointing and an Impregnation Test to confirm the integrity of the hydraulic system, both prior to and after jointing.
The end customer, TNB, had a tight programme for restoring power to Langkawi. With concentrated effort from everybody involved in the project, it was completed on time to complete the switch on, as required by TNB.
