33kV offshore renewable energy substation cable installation
Elmeridge Cable Services (ecs) were awarded the contract for the cable system design, supply, installation and commissioning of 33kV internal platform cables during fabrication of the offshore substation for the Lincs Offshore Wind Farm project.
Working closely with the platform design team, as well as the suppliers of other electrical equipment and services, ecs designed the 33kV cable system in accordance with the client's electrical and mechanical requirements. A key part of the design process was the careful selection of all materials to withstand the harsh offshore operating environment and stringent commissioning tests specified.
Once design had been signed off, ecs procured all necessary 33kV cable, cleats, terminations, earthing and identification, before mobilising to the substation platform fabrication site in the North East of England. The 33kV cable with fire retardant zero halogen properties was manufactured by nkt cables. The cable was installed and cleated using the Ellis Vulcan cleat system, before being terminated by qualified staff on to size 3 PFISTERER offshore type GIS terminations.
The cable system installation design involved the complex routing of up to 6 cables per phase, over multiple platform decks. Fixings took into account system rating, short circuit rating and the mechanical forces on multiple bends and vertical sections. A total of 120 cable terminations were assembled along with the earthing and circuit identification.
Upon completion all circuits were subjected to a rigorous visual and electrical testing regime.
