132kV IP gas cable circuit emergency return to service
When a 132kV Internal Pressure Gas filled cable circuit failed having been struck by lightning, ecs received an urgent call from the Network Operator and immediately despatched staff to site to assess the damage caused and recommend a return to service solution.
The circuit, based in the South of England was over 50 years old, of a technology no longer supported by the cable manufacturing industry and no spares parts were available for making a repair. As such it became apparent that some of the existing equipment would have to be re-used in conjunction with new XLPE cable and terminations. ecs designed and proposed the method of permanent re-establishment of the circuit to the Network Operator.
ecs were able to deliver the replacement HV cable and terminations from stock. This allowed jointing to take place on site whilst crucial parts of the original circuit were removed for refurbishment by ecs staff. In parallel the supply of three core gas filled cable to single core XLPE cable transition joints was expedited to coincide with the completion of the other preparatory works.
ecs working closely with their partners, were able to re-instate the circuit in the minimum amount of time and the circuit was successfully re-energised.
